This invention is an iPad interactive game application designed to help 4-8 year old children gain knowledge about Obesity & Type 2 diabetes. It also teaches them how to prevent this dangerous disease. The app is a digital version of a toolkit that was developed in 2012 by the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to educate children on the dangers of type 2 diabetes. Based on a play that was initially developed by the Saguaro Girl Scout Senior Troop 509 from Tucson Arizona with funding from Arizona Department of Health Services Office of Border Health, the app provides an interactive game-like environment that steps you through five main areas; Let’s Read; Let’s Cook; Let’s Exercise; and Let’s Play. Every area provides unique interactions such as the Let’s Cook area, where a parent must be present with the child to perform these playful interactions. This also gives the parents an opportunity to engage in their child’s learning process of type 2 diabetes. The application will initially be launched for free in English and Spanish on the Apple iTunes Store.



Childhood obesity is becoming a major problem in the United States and it affects one third of our children (Source: CDC).  Children who are obese are more likely to have immediate and long-term health effects such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and/or cancer.  The American Diabetes Association states that about 215,000 people who are younger than 20 years have diabetes; this is 1 in 400.  This is a growing problem in the US and if no action is taken to prevent this issue it is predicted that by the year of 2015 1 in 3 people will have diabetes  (Source: American Diabetes Association).  Although these statistics are alarming, it is important to realize that this can be prevented. One way is by strategically educating our youth about the importance of healthy lifestyle habits, including eating healthy and practicing physical exercise. By simply educating we can help lower the risk of obesity and related diseases such as diabetes.



• Pediatrics health care, Primary healthcare, high school and elementary school education, and public market

• Tool for teachers, parents, and physicians to teach children and adolescents the importance of having a healthy lifestyle

• Other educational technologies such as for smoking and alcohol education, sexual health education, and asthma can be modeled after this invention



• Provides comprehensive set of activities and interactions that helps educate children on the dangers of obesity and diabetes

• Teaches children about the benefits that come along eating healthy and exercising

• Concepts are delivered in a fin game-like environment

• Covers all aspects of diabetes prevention instead of specific areas like nutrition or exercise 

• Educational techniques and preventive medicine in this app can avoid health problems
