Apodized Prism Coupler for Optimized Evanescent Mode Matching Between Optical Fibers and Integrated Waveguides

Invention:

This invention is a novel optical coupling apparatus and method that uses a prism-based coupler with an apodized coupling region to optimize mode matching between an optical fiber and an on-chip waveguide. This invention adapts apodization for prism coupling. It shapes the diffracted output field into a Gaussian-like profile that closely matches the mode field distribution of a standard single-mode fiber.   

Background: 
Current solutions for optical coupling can have losses and problems with efficiency with uniform couplers, little applicability to other optical uses, and misalignment. This invention addresses those limitations and maximizes the efficiency of prism coupling.
