Repurposing of a Known Drug for Treatment of the Novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19)

This invention introduces a novel use for an existing pharmaceutical. This new use will allow the existing drug to be used to treat COVID-19. This known drug was recently found to be effective in interacting with COVID-19 genes. This interaction has led to antiviral activity against COVID-19 in in vitro cell cultures.

Background:
The coronavirus pandemic has had a disastrous effect on both public health and the global economy. With over 20M cases and over 800K deaths from COVID-19 worldwide, treatments for COVID-19 are incredibly important and sought-after. This new use of an existing drug to treat COVID-19 can be beneficial to healthcare professionals who are faced with treating critically ill patients who are utilizing essential medical resources.
