Zernike Mode Sorting with Vortex Phase Filtering

Invention:

This invention uses vortex filters, used in conjunction with single-mode converters, to spatially sort real and complex-valued Zernike polynomials and function as an arbitrary spatial mode sorter. 

Background: 
Optical systems rely on the precise manipulation of complex light fields. Conventional wavefront sensing and mode decomposition techniques do not efficiently distinguish between modes in real time. Many of the existing traditional solutions, such as interferometric setups or spatial light modulators, are bulky, slow, and sensitive to alignment errors. There has been a recent demand for more robust, compact, and high-fidelity solutions to analyze optical modes. Improvements in mode-sorting approaches would allow for higher throughput and better signal-to-noise ratios, addressing the limitations of conventional systems.
