Invention:
This technology, Restricted Area Printing by Ink Drawing (RAPID) is a novel printing process to develop solution-processed electronics. The method utilizes confined plates to apply external stimuli (namely increased temperature) to the printing ink. In doing so, control over the nucleation process and growth of crystallites in the printed films is increased. This command over solution-processed electronics development could allow for greater efficiencies and lifetimes in such components.
Background:
There are currently several printing processes for solution-processed electronics, including slot-die printing, doctor blading, and gravure printing. These methods, however, do not allow for the adjustment of several parameters. For example, RAPID is able to control the number of nuclei formed through print speeds which affect residence times, or the time nuclei have to form before solvent is evaporated. This increased tunability of electronic manufacturing will allow for more delicate research to determine how much control may be retained through confined-volume printing.
Applications:
- Energy (photovoltaics, lithium batteries)
- Technology (touch screens)
Advantages:
- Increased control of parameters
- Long ink confinement time
- Increased efficiency
