Safe Specimen Transportation Isolation Container (STIC)

Case ID:
UA20-177
Invention:

This invention is a portable biocontainment device particularly suited for self-collection, processing and transportation of contagious biospecimens. The device is a two-in-one system in which both bio-fluid and gas-phase clinical infectious specimens can be collected for safe transportation and pre-processing for advanced analytical tests.

Background:
In the event of a disaster response, such as a pandemic infection, there is a need for collecting biological specimens from individuals who may be infected with highly infectious diseases. Healthcare professionals need to have access to samples that are received from infected patients so they can be studied safely without exposing themselves to possible infection. Currently available options do not fully meet the requirements for self-collecting multiple types of biospecimen (e.g. saliva, expelled gas, volatile gas condense, blood or nasal swab) from people. This invention describes the design for a device capable of storing multiple types of biological samples safely and effectively during events like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Applications:

  • Biospecimen transportation

Advantages:

  • Easy and safe handling
  • Free from contamination
  • Multiple types of biospecimen collection
  • Insulated
  • Free from inactivation
  • Disposable
  • Collected samples can be directly shipped for various analytical testing
